Meet the fully accredited provider staff at the Feminist Health Center of Portsmouth.

Joyce Capiello

Joyce Cappiello, APRN

I was there the day the FHC-P opened its doors in 1980 when every chart was blank and every appointment a “first time visit”. Now it almost 30 years later and I continue find it a joy and privilege to provide care to women at the center, many of them have returned to the center for all these years and now some are sending their daughters to me as well.

I began my career as a women’s health nurse practitioner (Boston College) and have since expanded my background to become a family nurse practitioner (University of New Hampshire). This enables me to offer my patients a wider spectrum of health care.

In 1984, the staff and I opened a walk-in clinic to increase access to education, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. This walk-in program continues to provide services to men and women in the community on Wednesday evenings. I love this work, with all its challenges and the diversity of the people I see, and hope we will reduce the number and severity of these infections someday. I am on the Clinical Nursing Faculty and teach nurse practitioner students at the University of New Hampshire. I believe in education and in the empowerment of patients through accurate information and participation in their own care.

I also participate with Abortion Access Project in Cambridge, Ma. as the Director of the ROE Consortium. The mission of this group is to ensure the continued access to safe and legal abortion for all women. In 2010, I completed my PhD dissertation at Swansea University in Swansea, Wales. My research study was on Women’s Experience with Decision-making with Medication Abortion.

Joyce is available to see patients for regular gynecological care, family planning and STI testing and treatment. She looks forward to seeing old friends and meeting new patients. Appointments are scheduled through The Feminist Health Center.

Vicky Nast, APRN

graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following that I traveled extensively through Guatemala, Yucatan peninsula and Southern Mexico (1975-1976) observing the culture and studying with an herbalist in Palenque, Mexico, before completing my post graduate work (1978-1980) at the University of Southern Maine as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

After graduating from the NP program, I worked in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. My primary nursing experience was in ICU and ER medicine, until I joined with the FHC-P in 1981, where I’ve stayed, working with patients for the last 27 years.

Based on my philosophy that all medicine is valid if it serves the patient well, I have developed a strong working relationship with many alternative providers on the Seacoast, i.e. chiropractors, acupuncturists and energy workers, and make referrals to them when it is appropriate and acceptable to a patient. In addition to traditional drug therapies, I use herbal compounds, glandulars, nutritional supplements and flower essences. For the past 20 years, I have been working with and prescribing bio-identical hormones with great success to treat hormonal imbalances in women, as well as the symptoms of menopause.

My greatest joy and passion is to educate patients, empowering them to stay well in body and mind, and teaching them ways to care for themselves. My experience has taught me that the most successful outcomes happen when there is collaboration between the patient and the practitioner, through sharing information and by using an integrative approach to medical care.

Vicky is happy to see patients for annual GYN exams, family planning, menopause therapy, routine GYN problems and bio-identical hormone therapy. Appointments are scheduled through The Feminist Health Center.
